Race within the rules
This page explains what governing bodies, regulators, standards bodies and researchers publish. It is not a substitute for your class's rule book, a track's safety rules, the race director or the makers' instructions.
Through a club: the BRCA's published route
The BRCA publishes a route for newcomers. Its "How can I race?" page (2026) describes the steps: a newcomer finds a local BRCA-affiliated club with the BRCA's Club Finder, goes along to watch and talk to members, then introduces themselves to the senior club representative. A newcomer may make up to three trial visits to an affiliated club before BRCA membership is required. The same page points newcomers to the BRCA's "Race With Respect" initiative on conduct and to the Safeguarding section of its Racer Hub.
BRCA membership (2026) comes in Adult, Junior and Non-Driving forms, and junior driving members have the same voting rights as adults at section meetings and the AGM. The membership types, and the two different junior age lines the BRCA's pages give, are on the BRCA and national bodies.
Structured training: the BRCA Academy
The BRCA Academy is the BRCA's training and development programme. According to its page, Academy events last two days and combine classroom sessions, workshops, and on-track training and racing, with a maximum of 32 places. They are aimed particularly at juniors but are open to all ages, and the BRCA aims to hold two a year, scheduled around national races. No 2026 dates were listed when the page was read on 30 October 2026.
Classes meant for beginners, and skill ladders
Several bodies use class structure to keep newer drivers apart from the fastest ones. Each rule applies only to that body's events.
- EFRA 1/12 (Handbook 2026, Appendix 3, B.6): EFRA describes its lower-powered GT 17.5 class as intended for beginners and senior drivers, and as a starting point toward the faster LMP classes. Drivers who finished in an A-final in LMP Modified or Spec 13.5T at a World, European or national championship in the previous season may not start in GT 17.5 that season.
- ROAR Nationals (National Guidelines revised 13 October 2026, 12.1 and 12.3): the electric classes run as a ladder of modified, 17.5 and 21.5 spec classes. A driver may enter only one level below their highest class, so a 21.5 entrant may not also enter modified, and a driver who reached an A main at an IFMAR Worlds in the previous five years may not enter the slowest spec class at a National.
The general idea of Modified and Spec classes is on the classes.
Junior racing, body by body
Every body that runs junior racing draws its own age line. None of these is a legal minimum age, and no minimum age to race was found in any body's documents read for this site.
| Body | Junior provision | Age line |
|---|---|---|
| IFMAR (1/8 IC off-road rules 2024, 3.1 and 3.5) | A youth final at the World Championship, where applicable, with details in IFMAR's General Rules (not read) | 15 and under |
| EFRA (1/8 off-road, rule 2.5 as amended November 2025) | An under-17 exhibition final before the main final; if no under-17 driver reaches the semi-finals and main final, its winner is junior European Champion; as many junior finals as needed | 16 or younger on 1 January of the competition year |
| EFRA (General Rules 2024, 8.13.8) | An award for the best driver under 17 at its championships | Age on 1 January of the event year |
| BRCA (2026 pages) | Junior membership; junior entries at regional series | Under 16 (membership page) or 16 and under (join page and South West regionals) |
| NZRCS (Rulebook 2026, 1.5 and 1.8) | New Zealand Under-16 titles in its oval classes | Under 16, age taken on the day of the event |
ROAR's own junior age rules were not read, because its current rule book was not found. Trade press, known only from search summaries, reports that a junior final for drivers under 16 was added to the ROAR Fuel Off-Road Nationals in 2015, that a junior class for under-16s had been part of the ROAR Stock Nationals until it was dropped after 2007, and that a 15-and-under stock buggy class was reported for the 2016 electric off-road Nationals; all of that is unconfirmed. LiveRC's report of the 2026 ROAR 1/8 Off-Road Nationals lists a Junior final. A search summary of Red RC coverage says FEMCA added a youth class for drivers aged 15 and under at its touring car championship; the article was not identified, so that is unconfirmed.
IFMAR's electric off-road rules (2019, 1.11.1) also allow exceptions to the duty to marshal for very young or physically disabled drivers, after consulting the Race Director. Youth rules in full are on youth and junior rules.
Licences and registration as a first step
Among the bodies read here, racing at sanctioned events involves membership, a licence or registration, and what that involves differs:
- BRCA: membership is needed to race at affiliated clubs after the trial visits. A search summary of its sign-up page says adult membership comes with an adult licence and junior membership with a "U16" licence; that is unconfirmed.
- NZRCS (Rulebook 2026, 1.1 and 1.2): drivers at sanctioned meetings need an NZRCA National Racing Licence.
- ROAR: full-year membership is required for all National participation (National Guidelines, 12.2). ROAR's page says families can join together and that members range from under 7 to over 70.
- EFRA: international racing uses annual registration approved by the driver's national federation (General Rules 2024, 4.1); see EFRA.
What this site does not do
These pages report how the bodies organise newcomers and juniors. They do not teach driving, car setup or building, which clubs, academies and the makers' instructions cover.
