Youth and junior rules

Youth and junior rules: each body draws its own line.

Several governing bodies run junior or youth finals, awards and memberships, but there is no single definition of a junior. Each governing body sets its own age line for its own purpose, and the lines differ. This page gives each body's definition separately and says plainly where no rule was found.

Race within the rules

This page explains what governing bodies, regulators, standards bodies and researchers publish. It is not a substitute for your class's rule book, a track's safety rules, the race director or the makers' instructions.

No minimum racing age was found

None of the governing-body documents read for this site sets a minimum age to race. That is a finding about the documents read, not proof that no such rule exists. None of the age rules below is a legal minimum age: each applies only to its own body's events, licences or awards.

IFMAR

The IFMAR 1/8 IC off-road World Championship rules (2024) schedule a youth final for drivers aged 15 and younger where applicable, and refer to IFMAR's General Rules for its conditions; those General Rules were not found. IFMAR's electric off-road rules (version 13 November 2019, rule 1.11.1) allow exceptions to the marshalling duty for very young or physically disabled drivers after consulting the race director.

EFRA

  • Junior award (8.13.8). EFRA's 2024 General Rules give an EFRA award to the best driver under 17 at its championships, with age taken on 1 January of the event year.
  • The 1/8 off-road junior title. Under the 1:8 off-road section's rules as amended at the 2025 AGM, an under-17 exhibition final for drivers aged 16 or younger on 1 January is run before the main final, and if no under-17 driver reaches the semi-finals and main final, the winner of the under-17 final is junior European Champion.
  • Guardians (3.7.2). EFRA's General Rules say EFRA and its officials accept no legal liability for claims of injury, damage or loss arising from organisers' procedures or equipment, and that competitors "or their guardian" can be asked to sign an agreement to these conditions before taking part.
  • A height rule, not an age rule (5.2.2). Individual stands on the drivers' rostrum are allowed only for people under 160 cm tall, at their own risk.

BRCA (United Kingdom)

Three statements of the junior line

The BRCA's own pages do not agree on where junior ends. Its join page describes Junior Membership, the BRCA U16 Licence, as for members aged 16 and under. Its become-a-member page lists Adult (over 16) and Junior (under 16). Its 2026 South West 10th off-road regional page defines junior entries as drivers aged 16 and under, who still need BRCA membership. The BRCA's handbooks were not read, so which line governs a particular event is not known here.

What junior membership gives

According to the join page, junior members can race at club and BRCA-sanctioned events with BRCA membership insurance, and can vote on section and general rules at the AGM or a section EGM. The BRCA's Non-Driving Membership, which it says is designed for racers' parents, pit crew and substitute marshals, gives trackside presence with membership insurance but no right to drive. The join page states no minimum age for the adult licence and does not mention parental consent or supervision of juniors.

Marshalling and training

At BRCA Large Scale Off-Road Round 8 (October 2025), no one under 14 was allowed to marshal; that is one event's briefing, and whether it is a rule across the BRCA was not confirmed. The BRCA Academy, the BRCA's training programme, runs two-day events of up to 32 places aimed particularly at juniors but open to all ages, according to its page.

ROAR (North America)

ROAR's current rule book could not be read, so its junior rules are not recorded from ROAR itself. ROAR's About page says its members range from under 7 to over 70 and that immediate family members can join on a family basis. Trade-press reports, seen only as search summaries, describe junior classes at past ROAR Nationals: a junior final for under-16 drivers added to the Fuel Off-Road Nationals in 2015, an under-16 class at the Stock Nationals dropped after 2007, and a 15-and-under stock buggy class at the 2016 electric off-road nationals. Those reports are unconfirmed.

FEMCA

No FEMCA rule book was found. A search summary of Red RC coverage says FEMCA added a youth class for drivers aged 15 and under at its touring car championship; the article was not identified or read, so that is unconfirmed.

A regulator's statement on charging

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's 2008 consumer alert on RC helicopters and airplanes with lithium batteries (08-189) says battery charging should be done by adults. The alert concerns aircraft, not cars; more on what it says is on battery fire risk. How bodies protect children through safeguarding policies is on safeguarding, and junior programmes are on how people learn.
