Race within the rules
This page explains what governing bodies, regulators, standards bodies and researchers publish. It is not a substitute for your class's rule book, a track's safety rules, the race director or the makers' instructions.
The figures below are each body's limits for its own events, from the edition named. They are not combined, and a limit from one body says nothing about another body's class of the same name. Rule books are revised often: IFMAR's 1/8 off-road book records amendments from October 2000 to March 2024. Whether a particular car fits a class is decided by that class's current rule book and the technical inspection at the event.
IFMAR: World Championship classes
IFMAR publishes one World Championship rule book per class, each read with a common "Section 1: General Rules for IFMAR World Championships", which this site did not find. The classes whose rule books were read are below.

| 1/8 GTE (electric GT) | 1/8 GT and GTE 2025 | At most 4S LiPo, in one pack or two equal packs, in a mandatory hard case; at most 16.80 V at the start; for 2025, batteries homologated or approved and at most 100 Wh each; minimum weight 3800 g. |
| 1/10 electric off-road, 2WD and 4WD | Electric Off Road, version 13 November 2019 | Two classes with a separate title each (4.1.3). Length at most 457.2 mm, width at most 250.0 mm. 2WD is rear-wheel drive only, minimum 1.474 kg; 4WD needs effective front drive, minimum 1.588 kg (4.2 to 4.4). |
IFMAR also publishes a 1/5 IC track (large scale) World Championship rule book (2024), which this site found but whose limits it does not record. Wikipedia's IFMAR navigation lists further World Championship classes, including 1:12 electric track, 1:10 electric touring car (ISTC), 1:8 electric buggy (from 2025) and 1:10 electric drifting (2020 and 2022). Those rule books were not read, so the list is Wikipedia's and is unconfirmed against IFMAR.
EFRA: European classes
EFRA, the European bloc, runs its rules through sections. Its 2024 AGM report names them as 1/8 Buggy (off-road), Large Scale (track and off-road), IC Track (1/8 IC track, 1/10 IC track, GT8 and GT8E) and the Electric sections (1/10 touring car, 1/12 track, 1/10 off-road). Of the 2026 Handbook, only the electric appendices (3 and 4) and the muffler appendix (8) were read; the IC track, 1/8 off-road and large scale appendices are listed on EFRA's handbook page but were not read.
EFRA electric classes (Handbook 2026, Appendix 3, version 4)
| European Championship class (A.7.1.1) | Motor | Battery (A.3) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/10 Off-Road Modified, 2WD and 4WD (separate classes) | Modified | At most 7.6 V nominal (LiPo) or 6.6 V (LiFe); no receiver batteries |
| 1/12 Modified | Brushless, no less than 6.5 turn, "blinky" | Lithium-based at no more than 3.8 V nominal; receiver batteries allowed |
| 1/12 Spec | 13.5T spec brushless, blinky | As 1/12 Modified |
| 1/10 Touring Cars Modified | Modified | At most 7.6 V (LiPo) or 6.6 V (LiFe); no receiver batteries |
| 1/10 Touring Cars Spec | 13.5T spec brushless | As above |
| 1/10 Formula One | 21.5T spec brushless | As above |
| 1/10 Touring Car FWD | 21.5T spec brushless, blinky | As above |
"Blinky" is EFRA's term for a speed controller running a zero-timing profile that leaves the motor's preset timing alone and disables boost, shown by a blinking light when armed (A.4.3.1). Some EFRA weights and sizes, from the same appendix:
- 1/10 touring car: bodies based on real touring cars at least 420 mm long and homologated by EFRA, no GT or sports car bodies; width with body at most 195 mm; the measurements table lists a minimum weight of 1320 g (B.7.1 and 7.2).
- 1/10 Formula One: width at most 200 mm; minimum 1050 g on rubber tyres or 1010 g on foam tyres, including transponder (B.8.4 to 8.6).
- 1/10 front-wheel drive: width at most 195 mm; minimum 1250 g including transponder (B.9.1).
- 1/12: split into LMP (prototype sports cars, in Modified and Spec 13.5T) and GT 17.5, which EFRA describes as meant for beginners and senior drivers (B.6). The GT 17.5 class, which uses GT12 bodyshells, has a minimum of 790 g with bodyshell and transponder (B.6); the separate GT12 class in section C has its own minimum of 950 g ready to race (C.1.2). They are two different classes.
- 1/10 off-road: 2WD minimum 1.474 kg and 4WD 1.588 kg, printed in the handbook as "gram" (D.1.2 and D.2).
ROAR: classes at the Nationals
ROAR's current rule book was not read, so ROAR's class definitions are not recorded here. Its National Guidelines (revised 13 October 2026) show how classes are grouped at its top level: electric on-road, electric off-road, fuel on-road and fuel off-road, with entrants limited to three classes (13.3 and 13.8). Electric classes form a skill ladder of modified, 17.5 and 21.5 spec classes. A driver may enter only one level below their highest class, and a driver who reached an A main at an IFMAR Worlds in the previous five years may not enter the slowest spec class at a National (12.1 and 12.3).
The BRCA: sections
The BRCA's 2026 section rules were not read. Wikipedia lists 13 BRCA sections, each with its own construction rules: 1/10 electric circuit (including Formula 1), 1/8 circuit, 1/12 circuit, 1/8 Rally X, 1/10 electric off-road, stock cars, 1/10 IC circuit, 1/5 circuit, bikes, large scale off road, 1/12 carpet oval, 1/18 micro cars and truggy. That list is Wikipedia's. The BRCA's own Large Scale Off Road page (2026) names its national series classes as 2WD buggy, 4WD buggy, short course and open class, with petrol engines of 23, 26, 30 or 32 cc.
Oval classes in New Zealand
The NZRCS Rulebook 2026 (version 1.2, section 1) covers 1/10 electric oval classes: Superstocks, Stockcars and Streetstocks race as contact classes, and Saloon Cars and Modifieds as non-contact classes.
For how the bodies group these classes by power source and by surface, see electric and nitro and on-road and off-road. Motor, battery and engine rules in detail are in the equipment section.
