Race within the rules
This page explains what governing bodies, regulators, standards bodies and researchers publish. It is not a substitute for your class's rule book, a track's safety rules, the race director or the makers' instructions.
Tyres: rules that most classes share
Three points recur across the books read: tyres must be black, additives are restricted or banned, and championships often use a single controlled tyre. The detail differs by body and class.
- Colour. EFRA Appendix 3 (A 12.12): black except for sidewall detailing. IFMAR electric off-road (2019, 4.2.11): all tyres black. IFMAR 1/8 IC off-road (2024, 2.4): black, with compound marking dots or lines allowed.
- Additives. EFRA 1/10 off-road (D 3) and IFMAR electric off-road (4.2.11) allow no additive other than water. IFMAR 1/8 IC off-road (2.4) disqualifies anyone applying an additive inside the event perimeter. EFRA on-road (B 5) leaves tyre treatments to organisers and EFRA on health, nuisance and track-damage grounds, normally only odourless cleaners or traction additives, and draws organisers' attention to the possible hazard of many competitors using treatments in a confined space.
- Warmers. EFRA bans tyre warming devices at all its 1/10 off-road events (D 3), and in 1/10 touring car bans heating controlled tyres other than with permitted tyre warmers (B 7.4.3 to 7.5). IFMAR's electric off-road rules (4.2.11) ban tyre warmers.
Tyre sizes and allowances
EFRA (EFRA Handbook 2026, Appendix 3)
| Class (section) | Tyre and wheel rule |
|---|---|
| 1/12 LMP (B 6.3) | Width 13 to 40 mm, any diameter; not wet or greasy from additive at the start. A list of legal additives is published by the section chairman at least a month before each event (B 5) |
| 1/10 touring car and FWD (B 7.4.1 and 7.4.2) | Moulded tyres only, no sponge, 24 to 28 mm wide. At European Championships only the tyres agreed at the AGM may be used, and for dry weather a single control slick tyre, with insert and pre-glued, bought from the organiser; B 7.4.2 names no class, so it covers this section's classes |
| 1/10 Formula One (B 7.4.1 and 7.4.2) | Moulded rubber or foam |
| 1/10 touring allowances (B 7.4.3 to 7.5) | Modified 3 sets for qualifying and 3 for the finals; Formula One 1 set plus 1 rear set; FWD 1 set plus 1 set. Spec 3 sets for qualifying plus 1 additional set for the finals, with A-main drivers allowed 3 additional sets in the finals. Tyres are marked by technical inspection and impounded at the end of each qualifying day |
| GT12 (C 1.3 to 1.6) | Rims at most 40 mm diameter and 26 mm wide, commercially available and unmodified; tyres 20 to 26 mm wide; the additive for each meeting agreed by the organiser and the EFRA Electric Chairman |
| 1/10 off-road wheels (D 2) | Wheel and tyre at most 90 mm overall diameter; bead mounting diameter 41.28 to 55.88 mm; wheel at most 61.47 mm diameter and 38.10 mm wide; up to two 6.0 mm vent holes in the rim |
| 1/10 off-road tyres (D 3) | At Grand Prix events any commercially available 1/10 wheels and tyres. At European Championships one controlled tyre, compound and insert, proposed by the organiser and ratified at the section AGM; from the 2027 European Championship, 3 sets for training, 3 for qualifying and 1 new set for the finals. No metal or hard-plastic spikes; no sponge or foam tyres except enclosed inserts |
IFMAR World Championships
| Class (IFMAR document) | Tyre and wheel rule |
|---|---|
| 1/10 electric off-road (2019, 4.2.11) | Controlled tyres and inserts in both classes, chosen by the IFMAR Electric Executive from three organiser recommendations eight months before the event, decided six months before, and commercially available in all four blocs; the previous Worlds' tyre supplier is not eligible for the next. No foam or foam/cap tyres (internal foam inserts allowed). Width at most 44.45 mm, diameter 90.00 mm; the same bead and wheel limits as EFRA, plus 12 mm hex mounting and maximum offsets of 11.00 mm rear and 4.00 mm front on 4WD |
| 1/8 IC off-road (2024, 2.4) | No spikes or traction items, no "cut and glue"; wheel and tyre diameter 109.00 to 120.00 mm, width 47.00 mm; no rim specification |
| 1/8 IC track (2023, 5.4 and 5.5) | A controlled tyre. For dry racing a controlled rim and foam tyre of one brand, with fixed diameters and shore hardness, handed out and fitted in a controlled area, with no truing or modification. Rims at most 54 mm diameter |
ROAR
ROAR's rule book update of 18 October 2024 says rule 1.8.1 (GT12) allows pre-mounted rubber tyres at asphalt tracks, and that the race director decides whether rubber or foam is specified at each event. ROAR's current rule book was not read.
Body shells
EFRA (EFRA Handbook 2026, Appendix 3)
- A 12.1 to 12.5: cars must be realistic, with neatly finished, complete body shells; open-cockpit cars carry a painted driver figure (at least a head or helmet).
- B 2.1 and 2.7: newly homologated on-road bodies must have the part number moulded into the front windscreen (1/10 Formula One Spec has no body homologation). A ready-to-race 1/10 touring car shell for the Modified and Stock Spec classes must weigh at least 60 g and may not be modified to add weight; only anti-tuck stiffeners are allowed.
- B 7.1.1 and 7.2: 1/10 touring car bodies follow EFRA's guideline drawings, model real touring cars at least 420 mm long in full size (no GT or sports-car bodies), and are submitted to the EFRA Bodyshell Homologation Officer. The homologation measurements are an overall length of at least 410 mm, width at most 195 mm, height on the car at least 112 mm and motor-hood length at least 105 mm; a homologated shell carries an EFRA approval number.
- B 8, B 9 and C: Formula One uses only Formula 1 body styles; FWD bodies must realistically represent a hatchback and be homologated; GT12 uses replica GT shells from EFRA's list.
- D 2: 1/10 off-road cars may carry at most two wings, the front 127 mm wide with a 63.5 mm chord and the rear 177.8 mm wide with a 76.2 mm chord.
IFMAR World Championships
- Electric off-road (2019, 4.2): a 1/10 body looking like a full-size off-road racing car; pipe-type bodies need a driver figure with head, shoulders and arms. Openings for wing mounts, antennas and the switch allow at most 6.35 mm clearance, and speed controllers, servos, receivers, batteries and servo savers may not protrude through the shell. Two wings at most, of the same sizes as EFRA's.
- 1/8 IC off-road (2024, 2.5 and 2.6): one rear wing of at most 217 mm by an 85 mm chord, with side dams leaving room for car numbers; a plastic front wing (carbon fibre forbidden) cut so as not to injure a marshal. Bodies represent off-road, desert or trial racing cars, and the shell must be cut so as not to injure a marshal who picks the car up by the front.
- 1/8 IC track (2023, 5.12 and 5.13): bodies are 1/8 reproductions of sports or prototype racing cars, which the rule words as of FISA, IMSA or CanAm sport classes, approved by IFMAR from homologations by ROAR, EFRA, FEMCA or FAMAR made up to four months before the event; at least 145 g.
- 1/10 IC track (2024): polycarbonate touring car bodies of at least 90 g including the wing.
ROAR
- Announcement of 15 January 2025: under rule 9.1.2 only ROAR-approved bodies may be used at sanctioned events. From 2026 every off-road body used at a ROAR-sanctioned event must be on the ROAR Approved List, whenever it was first sold, and rule 9.1.3.4 requires the maker's part number moulded into the body, enforced from 2026. Approvals last four years while the maker remains a ROAR Industry Affiliate.
- Rule book update of 18 October 2024: GT12 bodies (rule 1.8.1) must resemble full-scale GT2 and GT3 racing cars, with LMP and LMH bodies prohibited. A roof height under rule 1.9.4 was reduced to 117 mm with the chassis on 10 mm blocks, which ROAR says matches IFMAR and EFRA; ROAR's summary does not name the class.
The BRCA
The BRCA's 10th Electric Circuit section page lists a "BRCA Touring Car Approved Body List V11-07.2026" (July 2026) and a "BRCA FWD Body List May_2026". Only the titles were seen; the lists were not read. Approved lists are covered on approved equipment lists.
